Teen Summer Camp
As the world has grown more complex it seems that it takes us humans ever more time to "grow up". In
reference to grown up, this means taking on responsibilities that are financial and personal. It usually
involves settling down, buying a house, getting married and having children. In the past this was something
that often happened in the teenage years.
If it didn't happen in the teenage years it was sure to happen in
the early to mid twenties. Couples had large families of eight or ten. There were reasons for the early
marriage and the size of the families. They have to do with life expectancy and infant mortality. In the
past it was common to die in your fifties or sixties. There were no hospitals to properly care for children
or ensure that any sort of birth defect could be fixed.
It was common for children to die young or in child
birth. This has changed. In the United States today the average person lives well into their seventies. It
is almost guaranteed to have a healthy baby or at least one that will survive. There isn't the need to have
help around the house or on the farm any longer so the family size is decreasing. Along with these changes
is the advent of the teen summer camp.
Some teens may choose to stay at the camp they attended as a youngster
acting as a counselor or counselor in training. However, there are some who look to stretch out their
childhood experience into new realms. It allows them to accrue experience, see new things, and expand their
world view without committing to any one thing. This is the niche that the teen summer camp fills. It
provides a safe environment for teens looking for something more than what it is offered to them at the
traditional summer camp they attended in younger years.
