Summer Study Abroad
Traveling to another country most certainly allows a student to summer study abroad themselves, their assumptions and
their place in society. It is confirmed through the requirement to keep a journal during the trip. This
is necessary if they are to receive credit for their efforts. Beyond self exploration in the direct sense
the experience blossoms into several directions that allow further self exploration and subject exploration.
The first is artistic.
The chance to summer study abroad in the summer is taken because it is advantageous to the student, often times an
opportunity to get ahead in the course work of the regular year. It can be in math, languages, sciences, etc.
The course offering and study abroad opportunity offered by Off the chART Travel is unique. There is an
experience to be had along with the study of the summer. It is as much an opportunity to study your self,
your assumptions, your place in society as it is to study a school subject. It is up to the individual
participating in the trip as to whether they want to make it a summer study abroad program or not. If they would
like to receive credit for the trip there is specific criteria set forth for them to follow in order to
receive credit. It is also up to them to arrange the awarding of credit with their educational institution
before leaving for or upon returning from the trip.
Each participant will document their experience through an artistic medium of their
choice. This could be through painting, photography, film or any other medium of choice. They will also
chronicle their impressions of Samoan culture. This aspect is the subject of each morning of the trip.
Students are allowed time each morning to work on their art. For the burgeoning art student this is a
great way to build a portfolio. It is also an excellent opportunity to experiment with a different perhaps
unfamiliar medium.
The second aspect is anthropological and linguistic if the student is interested. To gain credit the student
must complete a twenty page paper before departing for Samoa. This could be a general overview of Samoa or it
could deal specifically with a part of Samoan life that interests the student. It could be the custom of
tattooing that has outlasted many attempts by missionaries to end. Or it could deal with the role of older
teenage women in the society.
