Study Travel
There are many new study travel situations to which they are
exposed and to which they are required to react. This is where they begin to study the culture in which
they are immersed. Inside of this cultural immersion they are part of a group of participants. These
participants will travel to different parts of the islands together. It
will also serve as the vehicle through which they record their experience in this different place.
In conjunction with this the participants will be studying a type of art. They choose the artistic medium
before they depart on the trip. In
addition to working on their own art participants can study and learn from local artisans.
Will the group be willing to do a certain activity as
opposed to another? What is the best way to present an idea in order that others may find it attractive?
Participants will have to study the art of persuasion and presentation.
Off the
chART Travel takes these necessities for observation and awareness and stretches them into different spaces. They will live together. They are also responsible for organizing parts of the trip together. They will have to study travel each other in order
to learn what needs other group members have. It could be photography or film making or painting or any other medium.
They will use this medium to record the observations they are making of the study travel culture surrounding them.
Study travel all by itself is a type of study.
A participant of an Off the chART Travel trip is exposed to the indigenous culture of Western Samoa which is
quite different from the culture of the United States. There are many
expressions of Samoan culture that are manifest in art: the fine and intricately carved bowls used for
'ava ceremonies, the silken like fine mats that are given to girls on their thirteenth birthday that take
years to weave, and the long lasting tradition of tattooing of both women and men, the siva siva dancing
that tells well known stories of Samoa.
A person who is traveling is always exposed to new situations, places,
and people. Whether study travel students realize it or not they become acutely aware and observant of their surroundings. If
effect they are studying their surroundings in order to decide on what to do next or how to act next.
