High School Summer Program

The students can begin to explore this theme while they are considering recording their experience through an artistic medium of their choice. Through art they can begin to see how they are changing as well as recording their impressions of a culture totally different from their own.

This experience lasts for eight days of the three week trip. It is important for high school summer program students to have this sort of exposure to cultures like this. The tremendous influence that western culture exerts upon the rest of the world can be completely ignored growing up in the United States. Then the high school summer program student is in the position to begin to evaluate where they fit in at home. What parts of American culture appeals to them and which parts do not.

When a high school student has the opportunity to go some place totally different they can see the influence their country has as well as realize that there are other ways of living. There are different ways to but it is beneficial to know those ways exist.

They will eat the local food of fresh fish, coconut, and taro. Often times they will eat with their fingers. They will take part in the daily activities of the village: going to the plantation to pick vegetables, fishing on the reefs, or preparing food for meals. Cultural traditions like drinking 'ava and the fiafia festivals will be experienced along with a traditional Sunday meal and a village meeting. When they return to the U.S. they will have this work to reflect upon as they further digest their experience. This life experience of indigenous culture is the beginning of the trip. It continues onward to include many other facets.

Diversity is the key to a successful high school summer program. This is what Off the chART Travel offers a diversity of experiences tied together with the theme of art. Students will have the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in an indigenous culture completely different from their own.
